Drew Henson Week 5 Pass By Pass Analysis

Author: Jeremy Dunklin

Overview: More of the same from Drew. He finished the game 17-28 187 yards 2TDs and 1 INT. He continued to show his great escape ability as well as his arm strength and accuracy on any route that works the middle of the field. He continues to struggle with the long passes.

I wish he was in a more wide open offense where I could see him complete more difficult passes. The offense he plays in is mostly short underneath passes to the back and tight ends. He has looked good in this run oriented offense which shows me that he could be a decent backup if Bledsoe went down as long as you scale down the offense and run the ball a bunch which we would do anyway.

He has looked good enough to give me renewed hope in him, but he definitely needs to work on his game. The mental aspect seems to be there, but he still needs to work on his mechanics and holding onto the ball too long. He also has a long way to go as far as consistent accuracy on certain throws as well.

1. 2 & 7 Play-action Threw nice little pass to TE running a comeback. A little late on the throw, so a DB was able to knock it away.

2. 3 & 7 Dropped back, nobody open. Could have ran, but didnt. Stayed in the pocket to long. Got hammered in the back by a DT and fumbled. Recovered by Amsterdam. Ball should have been gone 3 seconds earlier. You cant hold the ball that long and expect to get away with it.

3. 2 & 6 Rhein is now down 14-0/ Play-action. Screen to running back. 10 yard gain to the left.

4. 2 & 6 Hits WR across the middle for a 12 yard gain.

5. 2 & 5 Under pressure, beats the blitz and hits TE perfectly underneath for another 1st down.

6. 2 & 9 Hits FB underneath. Excellent run after catch for a 10 yard gain.

7. 2 & 6 Floats perfect pass to the WR over the top in the endzone for a touchdown. Beautiful pass, although not a particularly difficult one.

8. 1 & 10 Underneath pass to FB for a 17 yard gain.

9. 2 & 7 Snap fumbled. Jumped on it for a 3 yard loss. Couldnt tell whose fault it was.

10. 3 & 10 Shotgun. Holds the ball forever. Finally fires a strike to a WR crossing about 25 yards downfield. Dropped pass. Showed off his arm strength. The bad part about this pass though is that he had a lowered delivery. His arm dropped slightly, but mainly it was his legs that spread out and got lower as he threw. Much like a baseball shortstop would throw.

11. 3 & 2 Dropped back, under great pressure. Hits WR out in the flats. Bad spot, short of the 1st down.

12. 2 & 5 Dropped back. Let it fly down the field. Threw it out of bounds.

13. 3 & 5 Under pressure, rockets the ball across the middle perfectly into his WR as he was getting hammered. Perfect pass and showed great arm strength. 15 yard gain.

14. 2 & 3 Screen to the right. No gain.

15. 1 & 10 Blitz coming, throws off his back foot. Hits WR across the middle for 10 yards.

16. 2 & 11 Blitz, he avoids one guy, but cant get past the other guy. 8 yard loss.

17. 3 & 19 Pressured, steps up into pocket, but a guys gets him from behind.

18. 2 & 18 Under pressure, hits TE sitting in the middle of the field. Drops pass.

19. 3 & 18 Avoids rush, throws way down field. Nice throw, but the DB knocks it away. I was happy to see him throw a deep pass on target because that has been his major weakness.

20. 1 & 10 Play-action, moves around, runs outside the pocket to his right and hits TE coming his way for 12 yard gain. Nice accuracy on the run.

21. 1 & 10 Play-action, hits TE running a square in, rifles it perfectly into his chest without breaking stride.

22. 1 & 10 Quick drop, slant broken up by CB

23. 3 & 5 Shotgun, guns it underneath into his big WR running a slant, WR breaks a few tackles and scores a TD.

24. 3 & 13 Shotgun, avoids rush. Throws the ball away.

25. 1 & 15 Play-action, avoids two rushers. Finds RB underneath. Nice run after the catch for a 1st down.

26. 1 & 10 WR runs a short out, Henson misses him badly outside.

27. 2 & 10 Plenty of time, floats it out to TE running a post. DB breaks up the pass that was a little behind the receiver.

28. 3 & 10 Rollout to right, no time to throw. Has to throw it away.

29. 1 & 10 Nobody open downfield, dumps off to RB in the right flats. 8 yard gain.

30. 2 & 2 Two minute warning. Another short pass to the FB. For a 1st down.

31. 1 & 10 Shotgun, Throws down the sideline to WR who was well covered. WR should have caught the pass. Nice throw.

32. 2 & 10 Drops back, throws downfield. Ball is too high, incomplete. Nobody really open anyway.

33. 3 & 10 Plenty of time. Lofts it to WR. Pass interference on the CB.

34. 1 & 10 Throws to WR across the middle. The pass was high and behind the WR. Ball tipped up in the air, intercepted. Ball hit the ground, but no instant replay.
